History

Erebor was first discovered sometime after the awakening of Durin by Dwarves who saw the mineral wealth of the mountain. It started as a mining colony with a road connecting it to dwarvish settlements in the Iron Hills and as far away as the Blue Mountains. By year 1999 of the Third Age, the Dwarvish stronghold had exceeded the ancient settlement of Khazad-Dum, a kingdom that fell due to the awakening of Durin's Bane, in magnificence and wealth. After abandonment and resettlement, the mighty Dwarvish stronghold prospered for many years until the dragon Smaug claimed the amassed riches in the halls of Erebor for himself. After Smaug was defeated, Erebor was reclaimed by thirteen dwarves from various clans. The leader, Thorin Oakenshield, briefly took his rightful place on the throne of Erebor, but he died of his injuries sustained during The Battle of the Five Armies. The lordship of Erebor passed to Dain Ironfoot of the Iron Hills, where now during the War of the Ring, he has been defending his people and their allies from skirmishes with the Easterlings and Mordor.
