The Dunedain were descended from the Numenoreans who survived the destruction of Numenor during the Second Age. The Numenoreans founded the kingdom of Arnor with the Black Numenoreans at their sides. The Dunedain fled Arnor after the destruction of Fornost and the end of the kingdom, spreading out and becoming known as the Dunedain Rangers. They protected The Shire and other places from the evils of Sauron and The Witch King before and during The War of the Ring.
